Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure designed to improve the shape, position or proportion of the ears. It is commonly performed to correct prominent ears, reshape asymmetrical ears or repair deformities caused by injury or previous surgery.

Procedure Time

Ear surgery typically takes 1–2 hours and is usually performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on the patient's age and the complexity of the procedure.

Most patients are able to return home on the same day.

Recovery

Following surgery, a protective head dressing is worn for the first few days to support healing and protect the ears. Mild swelling, bruising and discomfort are expected but generally settle within 1–2 weeks.

Most patients return to work or school within 7–10 days, although contact sports and strenuous activities should be avoided for approximately 4–6 weeks. A supportive headband may also be recommended at night during the early stages of recovery.

Results

Results are visible immediately after the dressings are removed, with the ears appearing closer to the head and more symmetrical. As swelling continues to improve over the following weeks, the final result becomes more refined, providing a permanent improvement in ear position and appearance.
