What Is Rhinoplasty? Everything You Need to Know

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reconstructs the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of the nose, or for medical reasons to improve breathing by correcting structural issues such as a deviated septum. Many patients choose rhinoplasty to achieve better facial harmony while also improving nasal function.

What Can Rhinoplasty Treat?

Rhinoplasty can be used to:

  • Reduce or increase the size of the nose

  • Remove a hump on the bridge

  • Refine the nasal tip

  • Straighten a crooked nose

  • Narrow the nostrils

  • Correct asymmetry

  • Improve breathing difficulties caused by structural problems

  • Repair damage following injury or trauma

Every rhinoplasty procedure is carefully planned to suit the patient's facial proportions and desired outcome.

How Long Does Rhinoplasty Take?

The procedure typically takes 2 to 3 hours, although more complex or revision rhinoplasty cases may take longer.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthetic, allowing patients to remain comfortable throughout the procedure. In most cases, patients are able to return home the same day.

What Is Recovery Like?

Recovery varies from person to person, but a general timeline includes:

First Week

  • A splint is worn over the nose to protect it.

  • Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common.

  • Mild discomfort is usually well controlled with pain medication.

After 7–10 Days

  • The splint is removed.

  • Most bruising has significantly improved.

  • Many patients feel comfortable returning to work or everyday activities.

2–6 Weeks

  • Swelling continues to reduce.

  • Strenuous exercise should be avoided until advised by your surgeon.

  • Breathing gradually improves as internal swelling settles.

6–12 Months

  • The nose continues to refine as the remaining swelling disappears.

  • Final results become fully visible as healing completes.

Is Rhinoplasty Painful?

Most patients describe rhinoplasty as causing more congestion and pressure than pain. Any discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with prescribed medication during the first few days after surgery.

Am I a Suitable Candidate?

You may be suitable for rhinoplasty if you:

  • Are unhappy with the appearance of your nose.

  • Have difficulty breathing through your nose.

  • Are in good general health.

  • Have realistic expectations about the results.

  • Have completed facial growth (usually from the late teenage years onwards).

A consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon is essential to discuss your goals and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
